A new era for Rotary in the Colac Otway region officially began on at the start of this Rotary Year, when the Rotary Clubs of Colac and Colac West came together as one, forming the Rotary Club of Colac Otway.
The historic occasion also served as the clubs' annual Changeover Dinner, with 76 members and guests gathering to celebrate the proud history of both clubs while looking ahead to an exciting future together.
The evening marked the induction of the new Board for 2026–27, with every member formally re-inducted into the newly formed club, symbolising a fresh beginning built on decades of service to the community.
Guest speaker Misha Coleman, CEO of Interplast, delivered a fascinating presentation about the life-changing work undertaken by the organisation. Interplast is an Australian charity that provides free reconstructive surgery and medical training throughout the Asia-Pacific region, helping people living with conditions such as burns injuries, cleft lip and palate, and hand injuries regain their health, confidence and independence. Her presentation highlighted the extraordinary impact that Rotary-supported projects can have beyond our own communities. Members responded generously, with all proceeds from the evening's raffle and silent auction donated to support Interplast's important work.
The celebration was attended by Rotary District 9780 Governor Tonie Thiel, Member for Polwarth Richard Riordan—himself a former Rotary Youth Exchange student—Mayor Jason Schram, Colac Otway Shire CEO Andrew Tenni, Colac Area Health CEO Fiona Brew, along with past Rotary members, friends and representatives from The Salvation Army, Lions, Meriba, VIEW and many other community organisations and service clubs.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow to newly elected Rotary Club of Colac Otway President Ben Zappelli by member Geoff De La Rue. A Paul Harris Fellow is one of Rotary's highest honours, recognising individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to the ideals of Rotary. Although Ben has only been a Rotarian for a relatively short time, he has already made a significant contribution through his enthusiasm, leadership and willingness to serve. The award reflects the club's appreciation of his dedication and confidence in his leadership for the year ahead.
The club also recognised two remarkable milestones in Rotary service. Longest-serving member John Blane was honoured for an extraordinary 55 years of service, while Peter Faulkner celebrated 45 years. Together, they have contributed an incredible 100 years of Rotary service—a remarkable achievement and a testament to the enduring spirit of volunteerism that defines Rotary. Their commitment has benefited not only the local community but also countless international projects that have improved lives around the world.
Collectively, the former Rotary Clubs of Colac and Colac West have contributed more than 147 years of Rotary service to the Colac community. Their combined legacy of fundraising, fellowship and community service provides a strong foundation for the newly formed Rotary Club of Colac Otway.
As the new club embarks on its first year, members are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. By bringing together the strengths, experience and passion of both clubs, Rotary Club of Colac Otway is well positioned to continue supporting local causes, contributing to international humanitarian projects and raising awareness of issues that matter most to our community.
The message from the evening was clear: Rotary in Colac is not only continuing—it is growing stronger. New members, new ideas and fresh energy are ensuring that the tradition of "Service Above Self" will continue for generations to come.
